Recent polling shows that almost half of American women say they’ve been sexually assaulted. Best-selling author Roxane Gay’s new anthology addresses that fact. “Not That Bad: Dispatches from Rape Culture” is a collection of personal essays by people, almost entirely women, who have experienced rape and harassment. She found a theme as she gathered the stories, of victims who diminish what happened to them. She said to one rape survivor in the Seattle audience: “I encourage you to recognize that you have survived a level of trauma that would break someone, but it has not broken you. And, you have to say that to yourself over and over again, because it’s true.” Roxane Gay is the author of the bestsellers “Bad

He sought to make his ministry “culturally relevant,” bringing a hipster attitude to conservative theology. His methods drew people to the church in growing numbers.

Perhaps it shouldn’t come as a surprise that the author of “The Botany of Desire” chose to experiment with and write about psychedelic drugs. They are edible after all. Still, like many people, Michael Pollan wasn’t exactly keen to fool around with mind-altering experiences.

Ignite Seattle is an unusual event. The organizers like to surprise the audience when they can — like that time a couple got married on stage. Thrills like that aside, there’s something thoughtful and genuine in every talk. More often than not, we learn something new.

Every one of these was a world; they're still in me.” On her way through those worlds, Jamison dealt with alcohol addiction. She tracks that experience from inception to recovery in her new memoir, “The Recovering: Intoxication and Its Aftermath.”
